Be Kind Rewind

I'm a little tired of Jack Black, but I think this premise sounds too good to ignore. Throw in Michel Gondry's involvement, and I'm there...

***

(from http://www.darkhorizons.com/news06/060502h.php)

Jack Black is set to star in Michel Gondry's eccentric comedy "Be Kind Rewind," playing a junkyard worker whose brain is magnetized, destroying every tape in his friend's video store and forcing the pair to remake the lost films, says The Hollywood Reporter.

In the film, Black plays Jerry, a man whose headaches lead him to believe his brain is melting. His brain is magnetized, leading to the unintentional destruction of movies in his friend's store. In order to keep the store's one loyal customer, an elderly lady with signs of dementia, the pair re-creates a long line of films including "The Lion King," "Rush Hour," "Back to the Future" and "Robocop."

Focus Features International has nabbed international sales rights to the under-$20 million Partizan production, which begins a two-month shoot Sept. 6 in New York.

King Kong Clocks in at Three Hours

Source: The New York Times
October 27, 2005

The New York Times reports that Peter Jackson's King Kong is substantially longer than Universal Pictures had anticipated and the extra length (mostly due to the special effects) has helped increase the budget by a third, to $207 million. The studio paid Jackson and Fran Walsh $20 million to create the film.

Universal executives got to see a version of the film in late September in New Zealand and now with seven weeks to go, they have agreed to release King Kong at a length of three hours. Each of the three "Lord of the Rings" films had a length around the same time.

"This is a three-hour feast of an event," said Marc Shmuger, vice chairman of Universal Pictures, who described the film as a tragic love story between the ape and Naomi Watts, who plays Ann Darrow, an actress. "I've never come close to seeing an artist working at this level."

"I anticipated it would be long, but not this long," added Universal chairwoman, Stacey Snider. As recently as late September, she expected about two hours and 40 minutes, she said. But on Wednesday she expressed delight with the picture she's got: "This is a masterpiece. I can't wait to unveil it."

King Kong will be released on December 14.

John Woo To Direct Live-Action HE-MAN

According to Variety, John Woo is set to direct a live action adaptation of He-Man, which will be co-produced by Fox 2000 and Woo's Lion Rock Production. The screenplay will be written by Adam Rifkin. No date is given and it seems the project is still in the very early stage.

Currently John Woo and his Lion Rock are working on historical epic Battle Of Red Cliff with Chinese company Asian Union Film and Media. According to Hong Kong's Oriental Daily, John Woo denied the report that Chow Yun-Fat had refused to join the project. Woo has asked him to play Zhuge Liang, the top advisor to warlord Liu Bei. Chen Daoming, who portrayed the king in Hero, is in talk to play Liu Bei.

At Petros' side is his fierce enforcer, Ko (Jun-ho Heo), and a lethal lady sniper, Song (Maggie Q). After Puma is snatched, the Interpol team insists on tracking down Petros themselves. Hon Sun rejects their request and places the team in the care of veteran police officer Kong Long (Sammo Hung). Finally, inspired by his young charges, he rises to the occasion, and leads the Interpol team on their quest for Petros and his team.

Henson Co. Planning Dark Crystal Sequel
Source: Variety May 13, 2005

The Jim Henson Company is planning to make a sequel to its 1982 fantasy classic The Dark Crystal, reports Variety.

Titled The Power of the Dark Crystal, the new movie is written by David Odell (The Dark Crystal, The Muppet Show) and Annette Duffy. No director is yet attached to the film which starts shooting this fall for a 2007 release. It will combine live-action animatronic characters with CG animation.

The story is set many years after the original, which was helmed by Frank Oz and Jim Henson. Original heroes Jen and Kira are now king and queen, and must fight to save their kingdom when the crystal is once again split.

The company is also developing an animated series, interactive games and other media as well.

"The Island" sneak peak, and my movie philosophy.

I saw "The Island" last Saturday night at a sneak preview. I must say it was a fun "popcorn" movie. It was a fun time at the movies.

So you know, I'm not a "movie snob". I try to enjoy movies for what they are. I use to work with a bunch of "movie snobs", people who forgot what movies were made for, entertainment. What I mean is that they don't try to enjoy themselves, they feel they need to be impressed and that most movies suck. I love movies, and enjoy most.

"The Island" is by all means not an Oscar contender, or going to try to out think you. Its a fun move and you will enjoy yourself at the theater. Its funny, has plenty of action, great characters and a cool ending. It runs about 2 hrs 15 min. See it when it comes to theaters soon!

It's 'vege-mania' in Wallace and Gromit's neighborhood, and our two enterprising chums are cashing in with their humane pest-control outfit, "Anti-Pesto." With only days to go before the annual Giant Vegetable Competition, business is booming, but Wallace & Gromit are finding out that running a "humane" pest control outfit has its drawbacks as their West Wallaby Street home fills to the brim with captive rabbits.

Suddenly, a huge, mysterious, veg-ravaging "beast" begins attacking the town's sacred vegetable plots at night, and the competition hostess, Lady Tottington, commissions Anti-Pesto to catch it and save the day. Lying in wait, however, is Lady Tottington's snobby suitor, Victor Quartermaine, who'd rather shoot the beast and secure the position of local hero - not to mention Lady Tottingon's hand in marriage. With the fate of the competition in the balance, Lady Tottington is eventually forced to allow Victor to hunt down the vegetable chomping marauder. Little does she know that Victor's real intent could have dire consequences for her…and our two heroes.

Nick Park ("Chicken Run"), the original creator of Wallace & Gromit, and Steve Box are directing the Wallace & Gromit feature. Peter Lord ("Chicken Run"), David Sproxton, Nick Park, Claire Jennings and Carla Shelley are producing.
Plot:

Trivia:

Before Christian Bale was cast as Batman, many other actors were considered for the role including Guy Pearce, Ashton Kutcher, David Boreanaz, John Cusack, David Duchovny and newcomer Hugh Dancy.

*	A very large number of directors were considered to direct the film. For some time, despite the fourth movie's failure, Joel Schumacher was attached to direct the film based on the Batman: Year One saga. After he left, among others, the producers opted for an even darker approach, and officially asked David Fincher to direct the film, who declined. At one point, following the Dark Knight saga, producers considered an older Batman, with Clint Eastwood taking the director duties as well as donning the cape. In 2002, producers planned to make a Superman vs. Batman movie with Wolfgang Petersen at the helm, but Petersen instead opted to make Troy (2004) for Warner's. Finally, Christopher Nolan took over the project in 2003.

*	Before Chris Nolan took over, director Darren Aronofsky was attached to make a Batman movie based on the graphic novel "Batman: Year One" and have the author Frank Miller write the screenplay. By 2003 there was a first draft screenplay with story boards, which are properties of AOL Time Warner. Warners decision for not producing the film is unknown, but based on the details that have since leaked out, it would probably have to do with the screenplay, which strayed a considerable amount from the source material, making Alfred an African American mechanic named "Big Al", the Batmobile being a suped-up Lincoln Towncar, and Bruce Wayne being homeless among other things. This is all detailed in David Hughes' book, "Tales from Development Hell".

*	Only days before the role of Batman was cast, only eight actors were asked to audition for the part. The actors were Christian Bale, Joshua Jackson, Eion Bailey, Hugh Dancy, Billy Crudup, Cillian Murphy, Henry Cavill, and Jake Gyllenhaal. Christian Bale got the part. However, Chris Nolan liked Cillian Murphy's performance so much, he cast him as Dr. Jonathan Crane/The Scarecrow.

*	Christopher Eccleston was rumored for the role of Dr. Jonathan Crane/The Scarecrow before Cillian Murphy was eventually cast.

*	Chris Cooper turned down the role of James Gordon.

*	Viggo Mortensen turned down the role of Ra's Al Ghul, the main villain in the film. 'Daniel Day Lewis' was also approached for the role.

*	Kurt Russell, and Dennis Quaid were considered for the role of James Gordon.

*	The title went through many changes. First, it was known as "Batman 5". It became "Batman: The Frightening" for a while and was then confirmed by Shepperton Studios' website as "Batman: Intimidation Game" before settling on "Batman Begins".

*	The movie restarts the Batman franchise, having nothing to do with the previous four films (Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992), Batman Forever (1995), Batman & Robin (1997)).

*	Anthony Hopkins was offered the role of Alfred but declined.

*	Laurence Fishburne was considered for Lucious Fox.

*	Filming was temporarily delayed on the London soundstage due to the sound of amorous pigeons in the rafters above.

*	The crime boss Carmine "The Roman" Falcone was a character from the comics. He was Gotham City's last "old school" gangster. He was killed, and his empire wiped out, when Batman's familiar rogue's gallery came into prominence.

*	Filming began on 22 May 2004 at Senate House (a property belonging to the University of London, just off Russell Square). The front of the building was made up as the Gotham City courts, complete with New York-style taxis and Gotham Police Department cars.

*	Christian Bale's trailer didn't have his name on the door, but said "Bruce Wayne" instead.

*	A full city block of Gotham - much of it based on the slums of Kowloon in Hong Kong which were torn down in 1994 - was built in a converted aircraft hangar.

*	The Batmobile has four 44-inch Humvee tires at the rear, while the front is covered in jagged plates of armor.

*	On the set, the costumed Bale constantly had two people trailing him to keep the Batsuit smudge-free.

*	On a converted parking lot at Shepperton, the film crew built an entire village of trailers where chemists and costume artists made neoprene-and-foam-latex Batsuits. The place was dubbed "Cape Town."

*	This Batsuit has no nipples, unlike the one George Clooney wore in Batman & Robin (1997).

*	Cameo: [Tim Booth] the ex-lead singer of British rock group James appears as a thug.

*	The script was written by David S. Goyer while he was also writing and preparing to direct Blade: Trinity (2004).

*	When Warner Bros. was considering "Batman: The Frightening" as the title, a script was released online that was widely believed to be official. Two writers, Terry Hayes and Rafael Yglesias were credited on the draft, but both denied writing it. The author was never discovered.

*	David S. Goyer said that the graphic novels "The Long Halloween" and "Dark Victory" by Jeph Loeb were a huge influence on his screenplay. When he was asked the question "What about Frank Miller's Year One?", he replied "Our story is not Year One."

*	David S. Goyer mentioned in an interview that his favorite pre-audition choice for Batman was Jake Gyllenhaal, but that he was won over by Christian Bale after seeing his test.

*	While filming in Lower Wacker Drive, in Chicago, Illinois, the filmmakers were so concerned for the care of the Batmobile, that they told the stunt driver to take as much time as he needed to make any move. Therefore, when it came time to back the Batmobile up, they went so slow as to cause traffic jams that had to be reported on the news. Simply moving the Batmobile around Chicago took numerous police as well as caused traffic jams where ever they went.

*	Before the shooting began Christopher Nolan invited the whole film crew to a private screening of "Blade Runner". After the film he said to the whole crew: "This is how we're going to make Batman."

http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire2005/index.php?id=30824

SCI FI Reveals New Series

SCI FI Channel announced a slate of new original series for the 2006-07 season, adding projects from luminaries in film, television and literature to its roster of scripted dramas, miniseries and alternative series. The new shows will incorporate the mainstream appeal of fantasy, adventure and alternative reality.

The following scripted series are currently in development:

•An untitled project executive-produced by Academy Award-winning actor/producer Michael Douglas, based on the work of the late author Shirley Jackson (The Haunting of Hill House). Storylines and themes from Jackson's catalog of supernatural short stories will be woven into her real life experiences transitioning from urban mom to small-town matriarch.

•Heroes Anonymous, a live-action series based the comic book created by Scott Gimpel and Bill Morrison which follows a group of 20-something aspiring superheroes who form a support group to help them discover their own identity while carving out their secret identity. The series will be executive-produced by Lawrence Bender (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction), Kevin Brown (Legend of Earthsea, Roswell) and Karl Schaefer (The Dead Zone). Gimpel and Morrison will write the pilot.

•Those Who Walk in Darkness, a drama based on John Ridley's (Three Kings, Third Watch) best-selling novel of the same name about an expert team of S.W.A.T. police whose primary mission is to hunt down and capture people who genetically possess super powers. John Ridley will write and executive-produce in association with NBC Universal Television Studio.

•Urban Arcana, an action series inspired by the Hasbro/Worlds of Wonder role-playing game which follows an undercover detective who must protect the human population from the influx of chameleon-like, mythological creatures from a parallel world. Aron Coleite (Crossing Jordan) will write, with Gary A. Randall and Rockne O'Bannon (The Triangle, Farscape) executive-producing in association with Fox Television Studios.

•Tomorrow's Child, a series centered around a young girl who was horribly burned in an accident and saved by a special skin of extraterrestrial origin, which gives her powers beyond human comprehension. She travels the country pursued by the government while looking for the origin of her powers and seeking out others like her. Produced by NBC Universal Television Studio and Gary Foster's Horseshoe Bay Productions (Daredevil, Elektra).

•Time Tunnel, an updated interpretation of the classic 1960s television series created by Irwin Allen. The new series centers on a female scientist and a government agent who find themselves trapped in time when an experimental time travel project is sabotaged. Produced with Fox Television Studios and Kevin Burns and Jon Jashni of Synthesis Entertainment. Allen's wife, Shelia Allen, will produce. Written by John Turman (The Hulk).

•3:52, from distinguished television writer/producer John Tinker (Judging Amy, The Practice), takes place in the wake of the sudden disappearance of 2 billion people from the face of the Earth. The series, named for the time of the vanishing, will be told from the point of view of a small Maryland town.

The network also announced the following alternative series:

•Barbarian Chronicles, a half-hour animated ensemble comedy from Brendon Small, creator of the offbeat strip series Home Movies. David Letterman's Worldwide Pants will produce along with Small.

•Seriously Baffling Mysteries, a half-hour mockumentary hosted by Jonathan Frankle, which goes in search of the paranormal on a shoestring budget. In each episode, production chaos and behind-the-scenes dysfunction interrupt Frankle's attempt at supernatural investigative reporting.

Schrader's Exorcist Is Revived

Paul Schrader, who was replaced as director of Exorcist: The Beginning after producers were displeased with the final cut of the film, will see his version open in theaters after all, Variety reported. Warner Brothers Pictures will handle the distribution under a previous agreement with Morgan Creek Productions.

Morgan Creek's Jim Robinson pulled the plug on Schrader's nearly finished film in September 2003 over creative differences, the trade paper reported. The studio replaced Schrader with Renny Harlin and spent another $35 million to complete the film with Stellan Skarsgård returning in the role of Father Merrin. Harlin's film, which opened last August, earned $76.9 million worldwide. Schrader's version will be released in theaters May 20.

WATCHMEN (Comic)
Written by Alan Moore; Art by Dave Gibbons

It all begins with the paranoid delusions of a half-insane hero called Rorschach. But is Rorschach really insane or has he in fact uncovered a plot to murder super-heroes and, even worse, millions of innocent civilians? On the run from the law, Rorschach reunites with his former teammates in a desperate attempt to save the world and their lives, but what they uncover will shock them to their very core and change the face of the planet! Following two generations of masked superheroes from the close of World War II to the icy shadow of the Cold War comes this groundbreaking comic story — the story of The Watchmen.
